Fallout from Iceland's volcano reaches Seattle
Last Thursday, April 22, I attended a concert by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, on their home turf. The program included Dutilleux's Cello Concerto, with Xavier Phillips as soloist. Because of the air traffic problems caused by the Iceland volcano, Xavier had to cancel his appearance, and his piece was replaced by Tchaikovsky's Francesca da Rimini. We learned about this change from SSO's email announcement dated 5PM on Wednesday, April 21. From the audience's perspective, everything went smoothly, but I can only imagine the stress during rehearsals caused by such a last-minute change!
